As the tragedy at the Navy Yard was unfolding, I began to wonder, "How could this happen?" Many people often question why God would let something so terrible happen. Here's the answer that I came to: I DON'T KNOW.
This week, I came across a passage that was very appropriate to this situation. 1 Corinthians 13:12 says "For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known."
There are things that God knows that we do not comprehend. Jesus told us (John 16:33) that we would have suffering in the world. What many of us want to know is WHY? Why are there shootings, floods in Colorado, other occurrences of human suffering that affect all of us. What Paul is telling us is to trust in God and in the end you will fully understand what His plans are. On this earth, God has given humans free will and thus some choose to turn their back to God and do evil.
For those of us that have faith and keep our eyes on God, the explanation that we seek will be ours someday. That is all that we have to focus on as we experience pain and suffering in this world. When we suffer, just remember the words of James 1:12: "Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love Him." Someday, we will all sit at feet of God as He answers the question we all want to know!
